How to cap your guest list without it getting awkward
Small venue, limited seats, or just a budget. Here's how to set a headcount, handle plus-ones, and let a waitlist do the uncomfortable part for you.

Nobody likes telling a friend there's no room. It's the part of hosting I dread most, and it's usually the reason people over-invite and end up with forty people in an apartment built for twenty.
A capacity limit and a waitlist take the personal part out of it. Nobody is being turned down by you. The event is just full, and they're next in line.
Set the number before you send the link
Decide your real limit first. Count chairs, count plates, count what the landlord will tolerate. On beMYN you set it under Capacity when you create the event, and plus-ones count toward it, so a guest bringing two friends takes three spots. That surprises people the first time, but it's the only way the number means anything.
Turn the waitlist on
With the waitlist on, anyone who says they're going after you're full lands in line instead of getting a flat "sorry." When someone who was going drops out, the first party in line that fits gets moved in automatically and gets an email saying a spot opened up. You don't have to do anything.
If you'd rather pick people yourself, the Waitlist tab on your guest list shows everyone in order, numbered, with their party size. You can give anyone a spot by hand, and it checks there's actually room first.
Use approval for the really small ones
For a dinner of eight, I turn on approval. Guests request a spot, I confirm each one, and they get a note when they're in. It's a little more work for me and it means the table ends up exactly how I want it.
One small thing that helps: say the limit in your description. "We've only got room for 25, so RSVP soon" gets people to answer faster than any reminder.
