How to Host a Virtual Game Night (Without the Awkward Silence)

Organizing a game night over video call can either be the highlight of your week or an exercise in talking over each other. Here is how to do it right.

1. Send a Real Invitation

Just because the party is online doesn't mean you should skip the invitation. Sending a simple "Zoom link?" text 10 minutes before you want to play is a recipe for low attendance. Instead, use an event invite maker to send a formal, fun invitation a few days in advance. Tell people what games you plan to play and what snacks to bring to their computer desk.

2. Keep the Group Small

Virtual hangouts suffer heavily from the "too many cooks" problem. If you have more than 6 to 8 people on a video call, it becomes impossible to have a single coherent conversation. Keep the invite list curated so everyone actually gets a chance to speak and play.

3. Pick the Right Games

The best virtual games are browser-based and require zero setup from your guests. You send a link, they click it, and they are in the lobby. Jackbox Games are the gold standard here, but platforms like playingcards.io or even interactive mini-games on your beMYN invitation can set the exact right tone before the call even starts.

4. Have a Backup Plan

Technology fails. Someone's internet will drop, or a game server will crash. Have a backup activity ready that doesn't rely on a specific app. Trivia questions, "Two Truths and a Lie," or even just a dedicated topic of conversation can save the night.

Make the invite official.
